Maori and Scripture 1836

“These [scripture] are full of knowledge. We have often had things come which we thought good; casks of rum, barrels of gunpowder, and boxes of muskets. What is now come is to teach us not to drink rum, not to set fire to powder, not to use muskets, but to do us good forever and ever. Our hearts are sick for the word of God: we desire it more than axes, hatchets, or blankets.”
